Everyone says that the Internet can be an incredible way to make sales. But for a business new to Internet marketing, it may not be clear what tools to use to turn views into leads. Here’s why video will be key to your marketing efforts.

It Shows Off The Product

Every experienced salesman will tell you that a sale is as simple as finding somebody who needs your product, even if they don’t realize it, and showing them how it works. It’s difficult to arrange a live demonstration across the country, but with video, you’ve got a demonstration right there, and it’s one that you control; you can display your product in both a studio and on the street, doing its job.

It Makes the Product Less Intimidating

Especially with products that might be complex, involved, or designed for a specific purpose, purchase and use can feel a bit intimidating. We’ve all felt it at some point, and as anybody who’s had to explain the Internet to their grandmother over the phone knows, abstract ideas in particular are difficult to communicate solely with language. And we’ve all had that moment when we discover we’ve been using something we own completely wrong.

But it’s much simpler when you’re able to show what the product can do by clicking a button. It takes the confusion out of the product and allows your customers to understand where it fits in their life, all of which can lead to additional sales.

It’s Easy To Share

One of the advantages of the Internet is that if somebody wants your products, odds are pretty good that they know someone else who wants to use them as well. Video makes your product simple to share, and the explosion in social networking means that you can see enormous numbers of viewers and “pass-along” totals. For all the talk of viral video, it’s one thing when a million people curiously view your video without buying your product, and another when a few thousand potential customers see the product and give serious thought to buying it. Instead of making cold sales calls, your potential customers are telling each other about the product organically.

It Lets You Loosen Up

That said, you can also reach a wider audience, or an audience you never expected, with video. We’re all familiar by now with the Old Spice commercials mixing CGI imagery, muscular pitchmen, and an absurd sense of humor. Those started as a series of web ads that Old Spice commissioned before becoming the centerpiece of their strategy. Not everybody can pull off the absurd — or is interested in trying to — but video offers a way to have a little fun and show a more human side of your company.

There’s a Growing Audience for Web Video

Web video is growing at an enormous pace, largely thanks to more and more platforms to consume it with. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, game consoles, set-top boxes, home theater devices…more and more, web video is a presence in our lives. And as access expands, so does your audience and your ability to reach potential customers.

In short, web video is a great way to sell your product. And it’s only getting better.
